Boys Swimming: Host Sandburg takes sectional

The goal all season for the Sandburg Eagles was to make as much noise as possible at the state meet. The wins along the way were just gravy. Having finished second to Stagg last season at the sectional meet, host Sandburg turned the tables Saturday with a 307-271 win over the Chargers.

St. Charles East and St. Charles North resumed their rivalry Saturday, this time in boys swimming at the St. Charles North Sectional. St. Charles East held the lead for most of the day, but the North Stars were able to capture the team title, 285-277.

Boys Swimming: New Trier dominates sectional

New Trier is in its 100th season of boys swimming, and the Trevians are hoping to celebrate their centennial by repeating as IHSA state champions next week. Favorites for the crown all season, New Trier looked like champions-elect Saturday as they cruised to victory in the sectional, which they hosted.

Danny Thomson already owns one pool record at York, but added two more in a record-setting performance Saturday. Thomson won two individual events and anchored two winning relays at the York Sectional while leading Hinsdale Central (306.50 points) to its 19th sectional title in school history.

Two-time defending state champion Carmel remained on target for another state title, winning the sectional with 151.760 points, while Stevenson mustered 146.875 points to finish as runner-up and qualify to state as an at-large team.

Kelsy Kurfirst led Lyons as she won bars (9.55), floor (9.575) and tied Hinsdale Central’s Erin Morgan for first place on vault (9.725) while also capturing the all-around crown with a 37.9. Her effort helped Lyons finish comfortably ahead of runner-up Hinsdale Central’s 138.950 as well as the rest of the six-team field.

Sandburg, with a score of 135.05, missed out on the automatic qualifying bid to sectionals with a second-place finish at the four-team Oswego Regional. Host Oswego took first with a 139.375, and now Sandburg will wait to see if they’ll qualify for an at-large bid later in the week.

Andrew beat Vernon Hills by 169 pins Saturday in O’Fallon to become the first team to win three boys bowling state titles. Sandburg’s Joey Kopera rolled three consecutive strikes to wrap up a closing 257 game and win the individual championship by three pins.
